Click It or Ticket Enforcement

Elk Grove, Calif. – Throughout the month of November, the Elk Grove Police Department will be promoting the importance of wearing a seat belt in the car and keeping children safe by making sure they are properly restrained. The enforcement effort is part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign focused on increasing seat belt use.

“Buckling up only takes a few seconds and is the best defense in the event of a crash,” Lieutenant Eric White said. “We want everyone to be as safe as possible when driving or riding in a car and wearing a seat belt is the easiest way to do that.”

In California, the fine for a seat belt violation is $162. The fine for not securing a child in a child safety seat is $490. Under California law, children under two years old who weigh under 40 pounds or are under 40 inches tall must ride in a rear-facing car seat. Children under the age of eight or under 4’ 9” tall must be secured in a car or booster seat.

California has a primary seat belt law, which allows law enforcement officers to ticket someone for not wearing a seat belt without committing another traffic violation.

Funding for this seat belt enforcement operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
