The Citizens' Academy is a hands-on learning experience designed to give you, the citizen, a better understanding of the role and function the Elk Grove Police Department plays in our community.
Building Partnerships with Our Community
The Citizens' Academy is a ten week program designed to inform and teach interested citizens the various aspects of municipal policing. The program covers procedures from patrol and investigations, vehicle operations, arrest and control techniques, 911 communications,and code enforcement. The Citizens' Academy is free of charge and meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Elk Grove Police Department.
Goal of the Citizens' Academy
The goal of the Citizens’ Academy is to continually improve the relationship between the Elk Grove Police Department and the citizens. We will strive to develop a better understanding of the roles and services the police officer has in your community. Our goal is to inform and encourage a stronger collaboration with the community.
Who is Eligible?
- If you’re over the age of 18
- Live or work in Elk Grove
- Have no felony convictions
- Have an interest in the services provided by the Elk Grove Police Department
(Citizens must complete a background check before entering the Citizens’ Academy)
The Elk Grove Police Department will conduct two Citizens’ Academy classes each year. Class sessions are during the Spring and Fall. All citizens meeting the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply. Classes will be made up of 25 citizens. Classes are kept to a maximum of 25 participants to allow each person an opportunity to interact with officers.
At the conclusion of the Academy you will be given the opportunity to provide constructive input into the direction of future classes.
What Do I Need to Do to Apply?
Apply during the application period. Eligible citizens will be contacted for upcoming Citizens’ Academy classes. Due to the small number of participants allowed in each class, you may be placed on a waiting list.
